SUMMARY:Klinische richtlijnontwikkeling: Delphi-methode en patiëntenparticipatie
DESCRIPTION:Delphi-methodiek in richtlijnontwikkeling: samen bouwen aan gedragen aanbevelingen \nConsensus speelt een sleutelrol in richtlijnontwikkeling\, zeker wanneer wetenschappelijk bewijs ontbreekt of tegenstrijdig is. \nGuest speakers: Martine Goossens (Worel) \nLanguage: Nederlands \nSign up: \nDelphi methode (12:00 – 13:30): https://event.ugent.be/registration/k2cdelphimethode \nPatiëntenparticipatie (14:00 – 15:30): https://event.ugent.be/registration/k2cpatientenparticipatie

SUMMARY:Conducting and publishing a systematic review and meta-analysis (5 half days) (NL)
DESCRIPTION:The Specialist Course “Conducting and publishing a systematic review and meta-analysis” is a Specialist course part of the Doctoral training programme given by the Knowledge Centre for Health Ghent and the Biostatistics Unit\, with the support of the Flemish Government and the Doctoral Schools of Ghent University. \nTarget group\nSince it is an interactive workshop with the possibility of individual guidance and support and due to the variety of research questions\, the maximum number of participants is 10.\nWe give priority to PhD students of Doctoral School of Life Sciences and Medicine who actually plan a systematic review in the near future (see questionnaire in registration box). \n  \nAbstract\n\nSystematic reviews are key element of evidence-based healthcare. However\, its explicit and systematic approach distinguishes high quality systematic reviews from traditional reviews and lower quality systematic reviews. The course will teach the different steps to take to perform a high-quality\, methodologically sound and reliable systematic review. The course is filled with workshops\, exercises and personal feedback\, thus preparing the participant to get immediately started with his/her own systematic review. \n  \nTopic\nThis course teaches the different steps in performing a high-quality\, methodologically sound and reliable systematic review e.g. protocol development and registration\, literature search\, selection of studies\, data extraction and management\, quality assessment\, data synthesis (including meta-analysis)\, writing and publication. \n\nObjectives of the course\nDuring this course of conducting and publishing a systematic review\, the participant will learn: \n\nhow to develop the topic and refine your research question\nwhich study eligibility criteria might be important for his/her review and how to determine the criteria\nwhich databases are relevant in the domain of life sciences and medicine for his/her review\nhow to search for effective keywords\, how to use mining tools for search term identification\nhow to search for quality filters or search blocks\nhow to build a sensitive search strategy and translate them into other databases in the domain of life sciences and medicine\nwhich sources you need to consider to search for unpublished or “grey” literature\nhow to manage your literature\nhow to create and where to register your protocol\nwhich tools are available to aid different processes of conducting a systematic review e.g. literature search\, study selection and data extraction and management\nhow to choose a quality assessment scale or checklist for quality assessment of included studies and the body of evidence\nhow to perform a meta-analysis\nwhich essential elements need to be reported to increase your changes of publication into a high-impact journal\n\nAdditionally\, the course participants will take the first steps in performing his/her systematic review. \n\nTeachers\nDr. Nele Pauwels works currently (since 2015) as Information Specialist at the Knowledge Center for Health Ghent in Belgium. After she obtained her PhD in Medical Sciences\, Nele worked as staff member at the Knowledge Center of the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders (Center for Evidence-Based Practice)\, where she developed evidence-based guidelines and systematic reviews\, according to international gold standards.\nShe supports researchers (on individual basis) during all stages of performing and writing a systematic review (i.e. from protocol development and registration\, literature search\, record selection\, data extraction\, assessing the risk of bias\, data synthesis\, writing and publication). She teaches basic and advanced searching techniques in several (bio)medical databases (such as PubMed and Embase)\, and reference software (such as EndNote). \nDr. Ellen Deschepper\, statistician at the Biostatistics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Ghent University\, provides statistical consulting and support to researchers of the faculty and the Ghent University Hospital. She  graduated in 2000 as a Master of Science in Biostatistics at Hasselt University and obtained her Phd in Statistics in 2007 at Ghent University. She has over 17 years of experience in the field of biostatistics and is involved in several expert courses in statistics and in the practical use of statistical software. \nRegistration\nhttps://event.ugent.be/registration/ConductPublishNL2425 \nIf the courses are fully booked\, please send an e-mail to doctoralschools@ugent.be In case of cancellations you can take the open place. PhD students who asked to be on the waiting list will have priority to register in the next course. \nPlease read the cancellation policy. \nDates: Tuesdays 18 + 25 November + 02 + 09 +16 December from 9:00 to 13:00 \nLink: https://www.ugent.be/doctoralschool/en/doctoraltraining/courses/specialistcourses/conducting-systematic-review-meta-analysis.htm \n\nRegistration fee\nFree of charge for Doctoral School members. \n\nNumber of participants\nMaximum 10 per course. Due to the limited number of participants\, the teachers can give individual guidance and support during the workshop\, which was evaluated by participants as an asset of this course. \n\nLanguage\nDutch \n\nEvaluation criteria (doctoral training programme)\n100% attendance in all sessions

SUMMARY:Your Research Has Greater Reach Than You Realise — Turn That Visibility Into Career and Grant Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Aim: Discover how InCites and Altmetric can help you uncover and showcase the full reach of your research\, from academic influence to societal attention. Learn how to strategically use these insights—together with ORCID and your institutional repository—to strengthen your CV\, funding applications\, and academic visibility.\nDescription:\n\nThis tailored session helps researchers\, clinicians\, and professors explore how to measure and strategically use the full reach of their work. We will introduce both traditional bibliometrics through InCites\, which provide insight into academic impact via citation patterns\, and altmetrics through Altmetric\, which capture broader engagement such as mentions in policy documents\, clinical guidelines\, news\, and social media. Together\, these perspectives offer a more complete view of research influence\, spanning both scholarly and societal impact. Participants will learn how to critically interpret these indicators in line with DORA and apply them to strengthen CVs\, evaluations\, and funding applications. The session is designed to meet the specific needs of participants: together we will not only review the reach of their own publications but also address practical aspects such as optimizing ORCID profiles and ensuring research outputs are properly deposited in the institutional repository. In the first part\, we provide the key foundations and strategies for using these tools effectively. In the second\, highly interactive part\, participants will actively work with their own data\, ask questions\, and refine their professional research visibility. By the end\, attendees will have both a sharper understanding of research metrics and practical steps to improve their academic profile and opportunities. \n  \n\nFormat: Online interactive session\nSpeaker: Greet Wieme\, Knowledge Center for Health Ghent (KCGG)\nOrganiser: Knowledge Centre for Health Ghent (KCGG)\nLanguage: English\nMore info and sign up

SUMMARY:Conducting and publishing a systematic review and meta-analysis (5 half days) (ENG)
\nRegistration\nhttps://event.ugent.be/registration/ConductPublish2425 \nIf the courses are fully booked\, please send an e-mail to doctoralschools@ugent.be In case of cancellations you can take the open place. PhD students who asked to be on the waiting list will have priority to register in the next course. \nPlease read the cancellation policy. \nDates: Tuesdays 23 + 30 September + 7 + 14 + 21 October from 9:00 to 13:00 \nLink: https://www.ugent.be/doctoralschool/en/doctoraltraining/courses/specialistcourses/conducting-systematic-review-meta-analysis.htm \n\nRegistration fee\nFree of charge for Doctoral School members.

Because there is a wide spectrum from genuinely fraudulent and deceitful practices to questionable and unethical practices\, we rather speak of predatory practices instead of predatory journals. \nIn this session we want to identify the predatory practices\, analyse how and why they occur\, and what you can do to avoid them. \nSome elements of the training: \n\nidentify predatory practices\npitfalls in academic publishing\nthe the sense and nonsense of black and white lists: how to assess the quality of a journal?\nupdate our publication strategy\nglobal initiatives explained\n\n  \nThis session is organsied by KCGG and the Open Science team\, and is targeted at researchers in health sciences. \nRegistration: https://event.ugent.be/registration/predatory20250520

SUMMARY:Safeguarding Your (Health) Research Data: Navigating Custodianship in (Health) Data Management
DESCRIPTION:Researchers work with data—data about phenomena\, evolutions\, and often individuals. You might be using hypothesis-driven methodologies or exploring discovery-driven methods. The data might be gathered in a controlled environment or from real-life situations. In every scenario\, you are responsible for safeguarding this data while using it for your research. \nWhether you are collecting data directly from research participants or retrieving it directly from existing datasets\, the identity of these participants are typically known. Even when the name or identity number is irrelevant to your research\, you may be legally required to keep track of your participants: to inform them about data processing\, to allow them to exercise their fundamental rights\, to notify them about incidental findings\,… Obligations that may cause you to qualify as a data controller. Moreover\, even if you are not processing personal data\, legal requirements may still apply\, for instance\, due to being identified as a data holder. \nThis session focuses on the regulatory and policy requirements for working with data in a research context\, particularly within the healthcare sector. We will discuss your responsibilities as the custodian of the datasets you work with\, including the skills to distinguish personal data from non-personal data. Additionally\, we will cover the latest legislative developments\, such as the European Health Data Space Regulation and the AI Act\, and understand how they impact your research. Finally\, we will delve into specific requirements for using big data in healthcare research. \n  \nGuest speakers: Griet Verhenneman (Ghent University) \nLanguage: English \nSign up: https://event.ugent.be/registration/K2CSafeguardingyourRD

SUMMARY:Evidence-based guidelines: best practices and tools
SUMMARY:Understanding (your) research metrics
DESCRIPTION:Generally speaking for researchers\, the availability of metrics depends on your research output being available online. Individual researchers might use metrics as evidence for job or grant applications or to inform a publication and communication strategy. Beyond personal interest\, research metrics are used to rank and to benchmark universities and to drive policy and funding decisions. \nThis workshop will give an overview of different research metric and address the need for responsible metrics\, by putting these traditional and next generation metrics in context by discussing their benefits and limitations. This will include a demonstration on how to use InCites to monitor more traditional research metrics and Altmetric Explorer to provide research metrics on all types of research output. \nAdditionally\, we will demonstrate the tools to increase your research visibility like ORCID. ORCID is an unique author identifier that helps researchers to distinguish themselves and their work from that of other researchers. In this workshop\, researchers can take the opportunity to register for an ORCID identifier\, to update their ORCID iD and to explore the options for ORCID integration in the Academic Bibliography of Ghent University (‘Biblio’) and other tools (such as Publons and Scopus iD). \nWe will also tackle the importance of correctly affiliating Ghent University and/or Ghent University Hospital for research visibility. \nIn conclusion\, research that is (openly) available\, will be accessible to more people and will\, therefore\, have a greater impact. The workshop will assist you in raising the awareness of the importance of your research metrics and increasing visibility of your research. \nLanguage: English \nObjectives of the course: \n\nDuring this course\, the participant will learn the importance of correctly affiliating\nThe course will assist the participant in increasing visibility of their research\n\n\nFormat: online interactive session – 1h \nRegistration: https://event.ugent.be/registration/UnderstandRM2 \nTeacher: Greet Wieme (Information specialist – Knowledge Center for Health Ghent)
